TERMINUS: DOPPLEGANGERS?
We have come across a number of other bands over the years who have used/are using the name 'Terminus' and strangely enough the first two encountered were 'metal' bands. The first in the UK and the second in the US...
ENGLAND...
The first 'Terminus' that I heard of was when a friend found some of their flyers in our local independent record shop and then Chris, of Bus Station Loonies infamy, posted me a suitably defaced copy of one of their adverts.
Describing themselves as a "Kent based death band" (Eh?!) they formed in November of 1993... so, only ten years after us then. The flyers were promoting their new tape called "Vision". I wrote them a rather polite letter, including various bits of photo copied evidence, pointing out that we were using the name Terminus and that we'd been at it some years and were not about to change our name after this length of time. Needless to say I never got a reply. They later did a CD called 'Two Stages From Revolution' in 1996.Oh aye, they look like Death Metalers as well. Very scary.
AMERICA...
The next Terminus I came across after a friend in the pub found their site on the net and printed off a few sheets from their web page. These turned out to be based in San Jose, USA, and describe them selves as an "industrial/metal band". Yup, as I said, another metal band.
They go on to describe themselves as standing for "self reliance and individuality" opposing "the herd mentality and the brain washing of the mass market media". All well and good. This below a picture of them dressed up in the herd mentality stock metal uniform of leather bike jackets (yes, I'm a hypocrite; I've worn one for the past thirty years!), backwards baseball caps, checked shirt, long hair, etc. Yeah, I know, punk rock had/has it's uniforms too, but ain't we supposed to be learning and going forwards. We're preaching 'individuality' here for Christ's sake? This lot started in, er, 1993 as well, must have been something in the water that year (I blame the CIA/MI5 and why not? Everybody else does, or possibly fluoride). These have also had a couple of things released on tape and CD called 'Toxic iron Splinter' in 1996. They've even got a song called "Purge"! I'd love to hear it, I wonder if it has the same tune as our 1987 release?
THE WORLD!
There are also bands called 'Terminus' that are not heavy metal, including what seems to be a duo consisting of Pamela Passmore and Ure Thrall, who according to the Discogs site were later involved in a band/project called Asianova along with Jim Wilson and Bonnie McNairn from Voice Of Eye. They appear to have released a few albums, including; ' Nine Winks To Neptune' 1992, ' Children Under Stars' 1995, ' Every Laugh Has A Shadow' 1995, 'The Holy Spear-It' (date unknown) all on released by Discorporeality Recordings. there also seems to be a 'drum and bass' type band recording in the 2000's.
Well, I know we got tarred with the Goth brush for using the name Terminus and our 'morbid' imagery but I can't recall us ever getting mistaken for a death metal band - even though we did get a review in Metal Hammer for some unknown reason. Does the name 'Terminus' conjure up images of Satan and all his little helpers (running around forming dubious heavy metal bands with their crap unoriginal lyrics) or what? My mate always used to ask me why I'd called the band after a bus station... which he thought quite funny, still does at that. Personally, I probably got the name from a book by Gene Wolfe ('The Book Of The New Sun' series)... or maybe from the Roman God of boundaries for that matter. Whatever, there may well be other Terminus' out there, and chances are, other than the later two mentioned above, they're metal bands. We, on the other hand are Punk - in fact 'Punk-Rock'. PUNK and proud of it since 1983! And 'Punk' more as an attitude than any particular musical style or genre: All which seem to become straight jackets for faddists. We may not have done as much as we should have in that time, but we are still here and still (occasionally) releasing our own jaded vision of this 'nightmare world' and what it might be, given the ghost of a chance.
